Adding Fractions:
1- Find the common denominator.
2- Add both numerators then add both denominators.
3- Simplify if you can.
e.g.: 
1/2  +  1/4=
2/4  +  1/4= 3/4

Adding Mixed Numbers:
1- Convert mixed numbers into improper fractions.
2- Find the common denominator.
3- Add both numerators and then add both denominators.
4- Convert improper fraction to mixed number.
5- Simplify if you can.
e.g.:
1 1/2  +  1  1/3=
3/2  +  4/3=
9/6  +  8/6= 17/6  =  2  5/6

Subtracting Fractions:
1- Find common denominators.
2- Subtract numerators and leave the denominator as it is.
3- Simplify if you can.
e.g.:
1/2  -  3/4=
2/4  -  3/4= 1/4

Multiplying Fractions:
1- Find common denominator.
2- Multiply both numerators and multiply both denominators.
3- Simplify if you can.
e.g.:
2/3  x  3/4=  
8/12  x  9/12= 72/12 =  6

Multiplying Mixed Numbers:
1- Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2- Find common denominator.
3- Multiply both numerators and then multiply both denominators.
4- Simplify if you can
e.g.:
1 1/2  x  1 2/4=
3/2  x  6/4=  18/4  =  4 2/4

Dividing Fractions:
1- Find the reciprocal of one of the fractions.
2- Multiply both of the numerators and then multiply both of the denominators.
3- Simplify if you can
e.g.:
4/8  *  2/4=
4/8  x  4/2= 16/16 = 1<-----the answer
2/4  x  4/2= 1

Dividing Mixed Numbers:
1- Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
2- Find the reciprocal of one of the fractions.
3- Multiply both numerators and then multiply both denominators.
4- 
Simplify if you can
e.g.:
1 2/3  *  1 1/2=
5/3  *  3/2=
5/3  x  2/3=  10/9 = 1 1/9<-----the answer
3/2  x  2/3= 1

Adding Fractions

To add fractions, you must first find the common denominator. This is usually the sum of the two denomainators multiplied. The common denominator below is 10. Then you figure out how many times the denominator of the first fraction goes into the numerator of the fraction below. Then you times that number by the numerator of the top fraction. As shown on the picture, 2 goes into 10 5 times, and 5 times 1 is 5. Use this same rule for the other fraction(s). When you get the numerators of the remaining two fractions, add them to get the final answer.

Adding Mixed Numbers



When adding Mixed Numbers, you can add the fractions first. Use the same rule above to do this, except make the sum of the two added fractions into a mixed number. When this is finished just add the whole numbers from the question to the mixed number to get your final answer.


Subtracting Fractions



To subtract fractions, you must again find the common denominator. Then use the same rule that you used for adding fractions. (How many times does the denominator go into the denominator, then times by the numerator) and subtract the wholes.



Multiplying Fractions












Multiplying fractions is probably the easiest. All you must do is multiply the numerators and the denominators, then simplify if possible.


Multiplying Mixed Fractions





Same goes for multiplying normal fractions, except you must convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions, then multiply and simplify.


Dividing Fractions




When dividing fractions, you first have to find the reciprocal. This is the fraction on the right flipped upside-down in order to turn a fraction into 1. You then times this reciprocal by the left fraction.


Dividing Mixed Fractions










Same as above.


Problem 2.
It takes 2 1/4 scoops of flour to make one cake.

How many cakes do 15 scoops of flour make?












15 scoops of flour make 6 2/3 cakes.

Problem 3.
One day in Winnipeg with 10 1/2 hours of daylight, it was sunny for 1/3 of that time. For how many hours was it sunny that day?











It was sunny for 3 1/2 hours that day.

The first thing you have to do when adding fractions is to find the common denominator. Then you add together the numerators and add the denominators together. The last step is optional, you reduce or simplify your answer (the fraction) if you can.
















When you're adding mixed fractions you can add just the whole numbers right away or you can convert the mixed fraction into a improper fraction. Once you've done that you have to find the common denominator, and then add all the numerators together and the denominators together. If you converted your mixed fraction into a improper fraction for your first step, you will have an improper fraction as your answer. You shouldn't have an improper fraction as an answer, so convert it into a mixed fraction. The last step is to reduce or simply your answer if you can.
















Subtracting fractions. The first thing you're going to do is to find the common denominator. The second thing you have to do is to subtract all numerators together and all or the denominators together. And the last thing you have to do is to reduce your answer or simply it if you can.
















Multiplying fractions is the easiest! All you have to do is to multiply numerator by numerator and the denominator by denominator, and reduce your answer if you can.
















Multiplying mixed fractions is almost the same as multiplying proper fractions, except you have to convert the mixed fractions into improper fractions. You do the same thing, like in multiplying proper fractions where you multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator. Then you have to simply reduce or simplify your answer and convert it into a mixed fraction.
















When you divide fractions you have to find the reciprocal (the reciprocal is the fraction fliped up-side-down, what makes it a whole number.) Then use multiplication, multiply the numerators and denominators together. Reduce if you can.
















The first thing you have to do when dividing mixed fraction is to convert any mixed fractions into improper fractions. Then do the same first 2 steps in the previous explanation, then you convert it into a mixed fraction. If you can, reduce or simplify your answer.
